As the CEO of the Happiness Research Institute, my work is dedicated to measuring and understanding what improves people's wellbeing and overall quality of life. We're based in Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, one of the countries that is consistently ranked the happiest in the world. As someone who was born and raised in Denmark, I'm often asked about what makes Danish people so content. If you want an indication of how we approach life and think about happiness here, you can find the answer in these three phrases we use every day. 'There is no such thing as bad weather — only bad clothing'This is an old Danish expression without any clear origin.

CNN —The UN World Happiness Report released last week ranked Denmark the world’s second happiest country for a sixth consecutive year. But that would mean you probably don’t understand the Danish way of thinking. The Happiness Report then takes an average of the numbers given by those surveyed in each nation across the last three years. An 80-year old Danish relative of mine thinks it’s why the older generation came out on top in this year’s happiness report. Denmark is not a socialist country, but it has strong welfare safety nets, like a free healthcare system that people must pay into. AdvertisementDenmark has 'free' healthcare, but it isn't efficientDanish people pay high taxes to support a healthcare system that is becoming less effective. The social aspect of the Danish system doesn't work efficiently anymore, so patients are choosing private hospitals instead. The idea is to discourage people from consuming these products and then relying on the free healthcare system for treatment. The Danish work less and take more time away to reinvigorate their creativity.

CNN —A painting by Denmark’s former monarch, Queen Margrethe II, is going up for auction. “You now have the opportunity to acquire a very special – and not least royal – work of art,” said the auction house, which has set an estimate of 75,000–100,000 Danish kroner ($11,000-$15,000). The painting dates from 1988, the year that Margrethe started to exhibit her art officially. Around 2 p.m. (1300 GMT), Queen Margrethe II will sign her abdication and about an hour later her eldest son will be proclaimed King Frederik X on the balcony of Christiansborg Palace in the heart of the Danish capital. Margrethe, 83, will become the first Danish monarch to voluntarily relinquish the throne in nearly 900 years. Margrethe had informed Frederik and his younger brother Joachim just three days earlier, the Berlingske newspaper wrote, citing the royal palace. Margrethe is abdicating 52 years on the day after she ascended the throne following the death of her father, King Frederik IX. In the late afternoon, Copenhagen’s Tivoli Gardens amusement park plans to celebrate the new king and queen with the biggest fireworks show in the park’s 180-year history.

Denmark's King Frederik X ascended the throne on Sunday, succeeding his mother, Queen Margrethe II, who formally abdicated after 52 years as monarch, with big crowds gathered in the capital to witness history. The new king was later proclaimed by Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen on the balcony of the parliament, Christiansborg castle, with the words "Long live King Frederik the 10th." It is a task I take on with pride, respect and joy," Frederik said in his first speech as king from the balcony overlooking large crowds of cheerful people. The new king and queen later rode by horse carriage through packed crowds in the streets of Copenhagen back to their residence, Amalienborg, a royal complex built in the 1750s and located in central Copenhagen. The new king and queen take the throne at a time of huge public support and enthusiasm for the monarchy.

CNN —For many in Denmark, Queen Margrethe II is the only monarch they’ve ever known. But on Sunday, a new era will get underway when she hands over to her son, Crown Prince Frederik. This means that she will be able to perform duties as head of state when both King Frederik or Crown Prince Christian are not able, such as if they were overseas. King Frederik X will rule alongside his Australian-born and hugely popular wife, Queen Mary – which will undoubtedly delight her proud admirers back home. “The story of Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary of Denmark is one Australians have followed closely and hold dear to their hearts,” he said in a statement on Saturday.

People from all over Denmark are expected to crowd Copenhagen in a sign of the huge popularity the monarchy is enjoying. "It could be that she thinks Prince Frederik is prepared to take over now," said Lars Hovbakke Sorensen, a historian and associate professor at University College Absalon in Denmark. "He's 55, and maybe the queen wanted to avoid a situation where you would have a very, very old king, as you saw with Prince Charles." The British king was 73 when he ascended the throne after his mother Queen Elizabeth died in September 2022 aged 96. The new Danish royal couple will take the throne at a time of huge public support and enthusiasm for the monarchy.

CNN —He’s been known as the Crown Prince of Denmark since the age of three, but on Sunday, he will leave Copenhagen’s Christiansborg Palace as King Frederik X, sovereign of Europe’s oldest monarchy. Denmark's Crown Prince Frederik will take over from his mother, Queen Margrethe II, when she formally steps down as monarch on Sunday. His forename was chosen in line with the Danish royal custom of the heir apparent being named either Frederik or Christian. Crown Prince Frederik began his military education in 1986 in the Queen's Life Guard Regiment. “Crown Prince Frederik is a much more informal person than his mother,” said historian Lars Hovbakke Sørensen.

Novo Nordisk's Wegovy bonanza looms large in Denmark

COPENHAGEN, Oct 5 (Reuters) - The whirlwind success of weight-loss treatment Wegovy is providing a bonanza not just for its developer, Novo Nordisk (NOVOb.CO), but also for its home country of Denmark. Interviews with Danish economists, analysts, and executives at the Novo Nordisk Foundation which controls Novo highlight the benefits to the economy from jobs to private wealth - but also the potential pitfalls of relying on a single, outsized company. Record profits for Novo are projected to generate returns for the Foundation of more than $12 billion in coming years. Novo Nordisk added 3,500 jobs in Denmark in 2022, bringing the total in the country to 21,000 employees, out of 59,000 worldwide, a company spokesperson said. Before Wegovy, "we used to be kind of, 'Isn't Denmark the place where Stockholm is the capital?'"

Man dies in Australia after whale collides with boat

SYDNEY, Sept 30 (Reuters) - One man died and another was in hospital on Saturday in Australia after a whale struck and flipped their boat during a fishing expedition, authorities said. "A whale has been involved, whoever would have thought that that would have occurred, it's terribly tragic," said New South Wales Police Minister Yasmin Catley. The boat "was likely to have struck or been impacted by a whale breaching, causing the boat to tilt, ejecting both men", police said in a statement. While human deaths caused by whales in the region are rare, Australia and neighbouring New Zealand are hot spots for mass whale strandings on beaches. Now the couple are thinking about going back on the housing market with DZA. Will the prospective buildings impose a weight limit, as they often do? Will Great Danes be on a list of forbidden breeds, as they frequently are? Painting large breeds with broad strokes reinforces erroneous beliefs, such as that greyhounds need constant exercise, when, in fact, many are couch potatoes, or that pit bulls are natural born killers. “It’s almost like you’re an outcast if you have a large dog,” said Ina Obernesser, a veterinarian in Nyack, N.Y., referring to weight limits as meager as 20 pounds.

CLAIRE DANES is a bona fide 1990s style icon. But as a teen, I wasn’t buying it. According to an entry in my 9th-grade journal, I found the grungy, oversize tartan flannels she wore as Angela on “My So-Called Life,” the decade’s must-watch high-school drama, to be “totally fake.” I scorned the look’s unearned angst and Danes’s instant fashion-darling status—that is, until she appeared on the Oscars red carpet in 1997. Then 17, the starlet swapped her sloppy, plaid pile-on for a blue, Narciso Rodriguez bias-cut silk skirt and matching cashmere T-shirt.

We didn't see the internet coming, but AI is within viewThe adoption of groundbreaking technology is often hard to predict. The World Economic Forum estimated 83 million jobs worldwide would be lost over the next five years because of AI, with 69 million jobs created — that leaves 14 million jobs that will cease to exist during that timeframe. In the US, the knowledge-worker class is estimated to be nearly 100 million workers, one out of three Americans. The small and large compounding effects of productivity growth across many industries are central to the growth trajectory and the long-run effects of AI. This is an alarmingly trivial amount for an economy of $25 trillion GDP and over 150 million workers.

Australia hails 'Princess Mary' after Denmark defeat

An Australian has graced Denmark's royal family for nearly 20 years since Tasmania-born Mary Donaldson married Frederik, the Scandinavian nation's crown prince. But 20-year-old Fowler, playing as a false nine, is now soccer royalty in Australia after stepping up in Kerr's absence. "Princess Mary Offs Denmark," read the front-page headline in the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper on Tuesday. "Denmark might have Princess Mary but Australia crowned a new queen after a stunning Mary Fowler performance helped the Matildas qualify for the quarter-finals," Martin Gabor wrote in his match report. Australia were upset 3-2 by Nigeria in the group stage when both Kerr and Fowler were absent, the latter due to a head-knock at training.

SYDNEY, Aug 7 (Reuters) - Co-hosts Australia welcomed captain Sam Kerr to the fray for the first time in the tournament as they beat Denmark 2-0 to reach the quarter-finals of the Women's World Cup at Stadium Australia on Monday. Caitlin Foord and Hayley Raso scored the goals either side of halftime before Kerr, who has been absent with a calf injury, came on as a 78th-minute substitute to a huge roar from the crowd of 75,784. Heavy rain provided another twist and Van der Poel might have paid for his late spill but, with a rainbow arced over the city, he closed in on the rainbow jersey.
